Styrene-Butadiene Rubber (SBR) Binder for Li-ion Batteries

SBR is a water-based binder that is mainly used to prepare anode electrodes for Lithium-ion batteries. Such binder is characterized by its strong adhesion and high aging-retardant. SBR binder is also used for LiFePO4 electrodes.

What is SBR Binder?

SBR binder (styrene-butadiene rubber, CAS 9003-55-8) is a water-based latex binder used with CMC in graphite and silicon anodes. It gives flexible, strong adhesion to copper foil and avoids the toxic NMP solvent needed for PVDF. The table below lists solids content, viscosity and pH.

  • Appearance Milky white liquid with light blue gloss.
    Solidity 48~52%
    styrene 23-25%
    butadiene 70-72%
    Carboxyl 5%
    PH ~5
    Viscosity (NDJ-5S, 25°C) 5~100 mPa. S
    Vitrification temperature -18°C
    Storage Temperature 0~38°C
    Dissolubility Water-soluble
  • Emulsion Form
  • No antioxidants added

Applications

  • Water-based graphite anode slurries
  • Silicon-graphite anodes
  • Aqueous electrode processing

Frequently asked questions

Why use SBR with CMC?

CMC thickens and stabilizes the aqueous slurry, while SBR provides flexible adhesion; together they are the standard binder system for graphite anodes.

Do you ship outside Canada?

Yes. NanoLithium ships from Canada to the USA, Europe, South Korea and customers worldwide. Lead time and freight are confirmed with your quote.
